The first time I tried a wine from Domaine Viret, I was hooked. It wasn’t just delicious—it had this energy, this aliveness that made me want to know what was going on behind the glass. A little digging later, I discovered their whole winemaking philosophy, something they call Cosmoculture, and it was unlike anything I’d ever come across.

At its core, Cosmoculture is about creating wines in harmony with the universe. It may sound mystical, but the Viret family has practiced this approach for generations, believing that everything in the cosmos—planets, stars, even our own energy—plays a role in producing exceptional wine. So what does that look like in practice? Their vineyards are planted according to cosmic alignments, with each vine’s placement guided by celestial positions.

They consider not just soil and climate, but the natural energy currents of the earth and cycles of the stars. This thinking even extends to harvest timing and the design of their gravity-flow winery, built from ancient Pont-du-Gard stones. In the cellar, they step back. No commercial yeasts, no added sulfur, no filtration.

*This particular wine, “Renaissance”, Vin de France Rouge, is a blend of the classic varieties of the area, “Renaissance” combines Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Carignan (in descending order of prominence) from parcels scattered throughout the property.

It ferments naturally in concrete and undergoes a 45-day-long maceration, then spends nearly four years in concrete with no added sulfur whatsoever. This phenomenal wine offers a layered, meditative character, with ripe but beautifully controlled fruits unfurling slowly throughout the gently extracted, vibrant palate. For a zero-sulfur wine, it speaks clearly of the terroir and is viscerally expressive of its impeccable fruit of origin. (*source: https://lnkd.in/e9dMdtze).

Ancient practices thread through their work, too—Mayan and Incan farming wisdom, feng shui, golden ratios, crystals, even vine “homeopathy.” It may sound esoteric, but the goal is practical: keeping vines and soils in energetic balance. And the wines? They’re delicious, nuanced, cellar-worthy—and alive in a way that makes you sit up and take notice.

These bottles aren’t just wine—they’re pieces of history, place, and energy. It’s like sipping a starry piece of the cosmos, a galaxy in every drop…

And I’ll raise a glass to that. 🌌🍷✨
